Dorothy Macardle completed second level education at Alexandra College which she attended from the age of 16. This Protestant – run school situated at Earlsfort Terrace in the centre of Dublin provided a more academic second level education for girls. The passage of the 1879 Act that established the Royal University as an examining body resulted in Alexandra College offering classes to facilitate female students to sit third- level exams. This was crucial since at this time women could not attend universities. Macardle attended third – level lectures both at Alexandra College and University College Dublin. Graduating with a first-class BA in 1912. Macardle accepted a scholarship to study for a Dublin University Teacher’s Diploma in Alexandra College, which she achieved two years later.
Macardle took up a position as a teacher in Alexandra College
The loss of her position of Alexandra was as a result of her republican activities.
